Finally. My year end top ten and more… The video gives you a quick 30 second clip from each album and then we see to my remaining favorites. If you don’t want to play the vid, the pick are below:
- #10 Duncan Maitland “Lullabies For The 21st Century”
- #9 Smash palace “7”
- #8 Oranjuly (self titled)
- #7 Sunrise Highway (self titled)
- #6 Slumberjet (self titled)
- #5 The 88 (self titled)
- #4 Seth Swirsky “Watercolor Day”
- #3 The Orbans “When We Were Wild”
- #2 The Grip Weeds “Strange Change Machine”
- #1 Taylor Locke & The Roughs “Grain & Grape”
No doubt you have other favorites that are not on the list, let me know in the comments who you think I left off. I did not include most major label releases — that’s another top ten for next week.
The background music:
The Well Wishers "I'm In Love"
The Grip Weeds "Sun Ra Ga (Pt. One)"
Great choices (though I would have included Best Coast in my version).
What song is playing in the background of the "best of the rest" portion of your Top 10 video? I know I've heard it before but can't place it.
aaron; i respect your reasons, but we will have to agree to really disagree… i found that record because of this blog, and it has not left my car since… another big one for me was "blood/candy" by the posies… talk about an amazing comeback record… auer and stringfellow brought their best to it… as if they weren't important enough already…
Pity that you could not include Two Hours Tour, 'Territory', that I reckon is the equivalent of both Seth and Sunrise Highway.
What about Wild Bores, but maybe not power popish enough? Hey, it's our choice and the music matters most and we love it don't we?

No, I did not forget Farrah. Personally "Swings and Roundabouts" is my favorite single this year, but the album as a whole didn't get in my top ten. I may place it at #11 – it make a great first impression, but later album tracks just didn't stick with me.
:: dude, you obviously forgot farrah's "farrah"… easily the best pop record this year, and you even gave it a 10… not cool, man…
Some responding thoughts:
– Skeleton Staff's LP was very good, but just fell under the wire here. More a collection of singles than a cohesive album.
– "Marathon" was almost as good as GNG, but the debut is a much more consistent listening experience.
– "Queens English" was a bit too AOR to make the top ten of a power pop list.
– The Silver Seas is on my next list…
Oops. I meant 'Queens English'.
But no matter what it's titled, it deserves a spot on the Top Ten! (Although I notice it is included in 'The Rest' list…so we know you've got taste!)

How could you not include Mark Bacino's epic 'Bridge and Tunnel'? An amazing work of brilliantly executed gems, and the natural progression of his two earlier works 'Pop Job' and 'Million Dollar Milkshake'. It's grownup stuff, lyrically and musically, that rivals Harry Nilsson at his best. A truly GREAT album.
WOW! "grain and grape" is #1! but i personally like TALTR's second album "marathon" better 😀
Thanks for your top 10 list and your work throughout the year. I find a lot of good music from your reviews.
The Silver Seas "Chateux Revenge" easily the best from this year.
Thanks for placing Grain & Grape at #1. Impressive in depth and something rare anymore- I listen from start to finish, and repeat.
I personally loved "Solipsism" by Skeleton Staff. Definitely one of the finest CDs I've heard this year.
Great list. Half your titles are on my top ten too.
