The Wind "Harum-Scarum" FREE Album download

The Wind are a quartet from California. Together they’ve spent the last five years touring and writing their ever-unique, vocal harmony textured, sixties inspired rock music. Their sound has elements of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Queen with a healthy dose of modern indie-rock. Add to this it’s a double album chock full of grand sweeping melodies and quirky musical sketches.

One thing that struck me was the pristine production work so similar to Abbey Road – it’s as if Geoff Emerick was on the board himself. The contrast of whimsy and thematic grandeur covers the entire package, similar to a Klaatu, 10cc or Stackridge album. The flowing prog opener is not unlike ELP or Ambrosia on “Shellwhite” that takes a turn to “Hathor,” a bouncy melodic British flavoured tune. “Marvel Me” has a 70’s easy listening style with building chorus, but the next atmospheric gem here is the lovely “Oh Hadihu,” like Brian Wilson singing in Bread. The guitars assert themselves in the rhythm on “Lucy” with flawless harmonies on the chorus ” ohh, such a pretty pretty girl.” Then we hear a slow blues rock number “Come On” and a theatrical number “Unless, I’m A Liar.” The variety of styles here is very impressive.

Disc 2 continues with the 10cc-like “An Astral Dance And A Shared Dream,” but a few songs here (“Some Place,” “Yankee Brig”) seemed stretched out too long and don’t add anything new. Fortunately, a theatrical scene “I’ze Born a Rich Man” and an effective country rocker “27 Cent Blues” are added delights. The quirky “This Is The Modern World” is like 10cc doing Smile’s “Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow.” The remaining tracks are effective but don’t raise the bar any further. There are enough good tunes here to rate this is a excellent album, but with so many you’ll find yourself picking out favorites. A daring debut, and the band is so confident you’ll love it it’s offering disc one for FREE at http://www.thewind.us/share/

Holiday Treats from Kool Kat and Popboomerang

Various Artists “A Kool Kat Kristmas”
Wow! A real gift this season is this album full of great original power pop compositions with a Christmas theme. Maple Mars “Christmas Time In The City” has California-styled harmonies and brilliant melodies. The Smith Brothers give us “Every Day Is Like Christmas” with requisite hand claps in the catchy chorus. The Parallax Project gives us a tender rockin’ “All I Want For Christmas Is A Chance.”And I love the Britannicas hilarious “Chris Hillman Christmas” full of country twang and side-splitting lyrics (“I’d rather go to jail than see The Eagles re-form again”). Andy Goldberg does great double-duty with The Sun Kings “Santa’s Calling” and the positively wonderful “Channukah Guy.” Every artist puts forth a good track, so there’s no filler or coal to be found in this stocking. You should get this CD for another reason: $5 of every purchase will be donated to The Susan Giblin Foundation, named for the late wife of Mike Giblin (Parallax Project) who’s goal was to support animal wellness and welfare. Get this excellent compilation and an angel gets it’s wings too (really!)

Various Artists “Popboomerang 2010 X-Mas Party Sampler”
Popboomerang Records is an Australian music label formed by Scott Thurling that specialises in all forms of melodic pop and rock (power pop, jangle, folk & punk pop). I’m familiar with many past artists, but Scotty’s got a new crop of talent for this compilation. This holiday season we get a free sampler from the label with a few standouts, including Celadore’s exciting version of “Rocking Around The X-Mas Tree” and the solid vocals and horns of D.Rogers “Knocked Down The House.” Almost no traditional holiday music here but, fans of punk-pop like Shonen Knife will appreciate The Solomons “Evening Empire” and Georgia Field’s gentle folk ballad “Christmas Ribbon.” It’s a free download, so drink it in and be merry!

Jose Casas y la Pistola de Papa "Scampa!! Volumen 1" FREE DOWNLOAD

Good power pop translates across any language, and to prove it is a kickin’ free album from Jose Casas y la Pistola de Papa.  References to The Beatles, The Jam and Elvis Costello are easy to hear, and if you know any Spanish some of the lyrics are quite amusing (“Los problemas domestico de Clark Kent”). Since this is volume “uno” expect more to come…

Free Album: My Brother Woody

A big thank you goes out to the band (aka Michael Cleare), for letting me know about this.  I reviewed this My Brother Woody album and found it to be a total charmer. Most of the songs like “Your New Found Taste” have a macabre feeling behind it, maybe it’s the horns but it’s perfect for Halloween. Fans of Pernice Brothers and Lou Reed will really enjoy this. Even though this album is from 2008, it’s been moved from the bargain bin to FREE download at Bandcamp. And it’s got some bonus tracks and demos too!
