Upcoming projects: Tom Wilson Documentary and Cheap Trick

Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 5.27.00 PMMarshall Crenshaw has created a Kickstarter project to remember legendary record producer Tom Wilson. It was Tom Wilson who signed The Velvet Underground to Verve/MGM Records and produced their first two albums, signed Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention to Verve/MGM Records and produced their first three albums, became Bob Dylan’s record producer in 1962 (halfway through “The Freewheeling Bob Dylan” album), continuing through 1965 and “Like a Rolling Stone” (the period during which Dylan gradually “went electric”), produced the first album by then-acoustic Folk duo Simon and Garfunkel (“Wednesday Morning, 3 AM”), then seriously launched their career by unilaterally deciding to add electric instruments to “The Sound of Silence” (Legendary record producer John Simon told me that he thought that Wilson did it as an “intellectual exercise”).

Wilson “discovered” Sun Ra and The Arkestra, producing and releasing their first two albums on Transition Records, a label that Wilson established right after graduating Cum Laude from Harvard in 1955. Wilson “discovered” Cecil Taylor and produced his first album, “Jazz Advance”, for the Transition label. These are just the bullet points of Wilson’s artistic legacy; to put it in a nutshell, he was a visionary, someone that moved the Culture, saw the future and set about helping to create it, was one of the architects of Popular Music as we’ve known it since the 1960s and still know it today… And up until just recently he was pretty much a forgotten figure. Visit his website: www.producertomwilson.com to learn more, but even more important check out the Kickstarter page and help fund this project!

A10SP7LXMXL._SL1500_-1-744x744Cheap Trick is looking forward to the release of the new album Bang, Zoom, Crazy…Hello on April 1st. Check out the extras on PledgeMusic. If you don’t already have it, you can get the new song “No Direction Home” for FREE just visit the Cheap Trick landing page.

Singles: Brandon Schott, The Well Wishers and The Sensibles

Brandon Schott: Get ready for gorgeous melodies from Brandon, this song is an advance from his new album “Crayons and Angels” which is self-funded through Kickstarter here. This tune “Every Little Song” is full of neat little sonic details and also helped by having the talented Kelly Jones backing Brandon up. Soak it in and please invest in great music like this.

The Well Wishers: Well Wishers frontman Jeff Shelton is at it again. “Build A Life” here is an unmastered demo, but it sounds better than most bands finished singles. Keep making music Jeff, and we’ll keep on listening.

The Sensibles: This is an Italian band that keeps improving with each release, and this A-B single is full of guitar crunch and Stella’s accented delivery. “Bibi” is a fun punk pop romp, and “Little Girl” has an early ’60s girl group vibe (think Shangri-La’s) with its catchy chorus.

Michael Carpenter’s “Ride into The Sunset”

I’ve been following the career of the great Michael Carpenter since his first LP “Baby” showed up in 1999 in the Not Lame Records Catalog. So it looks like he’s going to retire his solo career and “ride off into the sunset” aka produce other artists music. Please help contribute to Michael’s funding efforts as I know he’ll go out with a blast of harmonies and guitar riffs. Check out his video below…

Help Support these bands!

Two more projects, I wanted to bring to your attention:

Yorktown Lads are a power-pop band ready to release their first album, but they need your help to release it on vinyl! Endorsed by my buddy John Borack (noted author and drummer for Honeychain) so you know it’ll be worth it.

parks

Somerville-based band Parks is the next logical step for Brian E. King (Oranjuly) its richer in sound and is one of those albums I can’t wait to hear. The samples are sure tempting. http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/parks.

New Music that needs your support!

Last month I took down the old “Help an Artist” page on the site and decided to add these pledge opportunities as regular posts, where they would get more exposure anyway. Well now we have 3 new projects that deserve your attention.

cliff hillis

Cliff Hillis has a new campaign for his upcoming E.P. “Song Machine” under way. Lots of goodies for contributors including Blue vinyl, CD, download & much more! Check it out at http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/cliffhillis

late_cambrian

Late Cambrian is presently in the mixing stages for their forthcoming album. It’s called “Golden Time” and is being partially funded by their Pre-Order Campaign. You could even get “The Scream of Destiny” for a price! Visit http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/latecambrian

The YouTube ID of oGfA0tQLX4Y?list=UU29XN6xhKMmgktFzRgFR8Ag is invalid. The first solo album from Maple Mars and Ruby Free frontman Rick Hromadka needs funding for mastering and duplication! Okay so he titles this pledge “Another Idiot Frontman Goes Solo,” but Rick is no idiot and I can’t wait to hear his latest. Visit http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/another-idiot-frontman-goes-solo
