Men’s Synchronized Swimming

After reading and listening to this guilty pleasure from Popdose.com my mind began to wander and I was reminded of this great SNL skit. Before finding success with Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer combined forces on this hilarious mockumentary about a pair of men trying to qualify for the U.S. Olympic synchronized swimming team. There’s just one problem: The U.S. doesn’t allow men to compete… oh, and one of the swimmers can’t actually swim. And that cheesy theme, Frank Stallone’s “Far From Over” is parodied in the background music.

OUT OF LEFT FIELD: There is some buzz online that mentions the Faces reunion could be possible. The original members would include Ron Wood, Ian McLagan, Kenney Jones and Rod Stewart. I would love to see Stewart recapture his old glory, as this would go a long way in bringing Stewart back his street cred.

The story of 10cc’s "I’m Not in Love"

The song most identified with mid 1975 – “I’m not in Love ” was a huge hit that put 10cc on the map in the USA. This is from a Japanese documentary about 10cc (with band members today). Using now revealed “secret” recording techniques that created sounds years ahead of it’s time (before synthesizers were common). To me it was fascinating, but you’ll need to know Japanese to understand the narration.

A moment of zen from "Animals"

Minilogue – Animals from ljudbilden on Vimeo.
Sometimes you just see a fun vid. And you wanna chill out – knowwhatimean? I love the animation and use of color here. Note: Do not take acid and watch this, you could see these “animals” come out of the computer and crawl all over you.

Eight Hit Songs from Obscure Movies

What the f___? You know these hit songs (some of them could fall under the category “Hit Songs we Love to Hate”) but do you know where they originally came from? I found this cool blog posting that goes into all the sordid details of these hits. Here is the list and links for each:

Lyme & Cybelle (aka Warren Zevon & Violet Santangelo)

I have a new batch of reviews this week, and hopefully a big surprise toward the end of the week. This weekend as I gathered some old CDs, I  found a moldy old gem that I originally heard this on the “Nuggets” box set several years ago. After checking the web for information on this group I recently found out the identity of “Lyme” — the male half of Lyme & Cybelle was in fact Warren Zevon. This is a great mid 60’s pop track, shades of The Monkees “Last Train to Clarksville” with it’s own psyche-pop touches. Fans of Warren Zevon will have to listen very closely to detect any traces of that famous “Werewolves of London” voice. The record was actually a minor hit (Top 100, though it made into the Top 10 in some West Coast markets). They duo recorded a couple of 45s, though on some of the later ones Zevon is gone with Wayne Erwin taking his place. Thanks for the IronLeg blog for this tasty tidbit of trivia – and a cool obscure song!
