The Fast Camels, Ken Sharp and Baby Scream

The Fast Camels

The Fast Camels “Full of Strange”

The Glasgow UK five-piece band, rooted in late ’60s psychedelic sounds recalls Mod-era Who, Jefferson Airplane, Love and Pink Floyd. The opener “Blissful Serenity” chugs along with its slowly building jangle rhythm, overflowing with reverb and a touch of backward guitar. It slows down to a simple acoustic guitar on “Caught In A Dream” which brings to mind The Moody Blue’s Justin Heyward and the harmonies are strong on the flowing “Storyteller.”

The band sounds tighter overall, and the songwriting has improved from previous efforts. The acidic lyrics of “The Wedding” tell a wicked tale of a cheating bride during the reception and atmospheric guitar work is excellent. The follow up “Sordid Dreams” showcase the dark vision of how “she messed up my mind.” Another highlight is the loopy “Family Tree,” with sounds like Syd Barrett’s version of a circus. The quite ballads work well as a contrast between the more sonically vibrant songs. “Honeymoon” is my favorite here, with a power-pop riff that carries the tune along with its pounding beat. Overall a great psyche-pop album, highly recommended.

Ken Sharp

Ken Sharp “1301 Highland Avenue” (Reissue)

Ken Sharp has gone back to his debut album from 1994 and added more than a fresh coat of paint to a classic that’s been a Japanese out-of-print LP for almost 25 years. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of “1301 Highland Avenue,” he has remastered each track and added new sonic arrangements.

An excellent example of power pop sounds better than ever, he opens with the wistful memory of the session on the brand new title track. You hear the influences right away, primarily The Beatles, Rubinoos and The Raspberries. Each track loaded with hooks – I don’t want to call out a single track (they are all good) and fans of 90’s power-pop should pick this up without hesitation. Trust me, you’ll love it. Highly Recommended!

Baby Scream

Baby Scream “Just Covers”

Juan Pablo Mazzola (Baby Scream) had made several cover tunes between album projects and decided to share it with us. A few bands I wasn’t too familiar and that helped somewhat. Mazzola has a unique vocal that’s part John Lennon and part Tom Waits and it fits nicely with Aaron Neville’s “Tell It Like It Is” and Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon.” Other tracks are good, like “Secret Agent Man” and the understated Psychedelic Furs classic “Love My Way.” Deconstructing other songs to minimal synths like on 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” and Sepultura(!)’s “Roots Bloody Roots” makes them nearly unrecognizable. However, you may want to check these covers out.

Monday Night Singles: Richard Turgeon, Ken Sharp, Ballard, Shake Some Action, and Butch Young

Yes, Keanu is a popular meme now with his John Wick movies and Richard Turgeon is riding that popularity with his new single “Keanu Reeves.” And a FREEBIE too!

Ken Sharp‘s newest single “Rock & Roll Supershow” is a love letter to Glam Rock with the help of Fernando Perdomo. For fans of T-Rex, Slade, and Sweet this is a “must-buy.”

While I expected something funny from Ballard, “I’ll Drop My Trousers To The Ground” is the bleakest, darkest, and most depressing song I’ve heard all year. You’ve been warned.

Shake Some Action has a new release coming very soon, and here is one of several good singles: “Stanger In The House” has this awesome echoing surf guitar. Check it out.

I have to say that Big Stir Records is doing a tremendous job. They have monthly singles out (currently at #32) and the artists keep getting better.
My favorite of the new bunch is Butch Young‘s “Captain Serious” b/w “Beautiful Dreamer”, the first new music from him in three years since Mercury Man. I don’t have a sample to post, but trust me this is good! Visit The Big Stir Digital Singles Page to hear it.

Freebies and Singles: The Top Boost, Geoff Palmer, Tommy Lorente, Vista Blue, Ken Sharp, Preoccupied Pipers, The Turnback

The Top Boost earns major kudos for this excellent 3 song EP. On the title track, they’re joined by Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, Imperial Drag). The result is a swirling blend of bubble gum pop sweetness with a wistful lyrical undertone. A+

Geoff Palmer (The Connection) has released a few singles in advance of his next solo LP Pulling Out All The Stops. This one is more than hot, it’s a FREE download. BTW, his former bandmate Brad Marino has LP out too, reviews for both coming soon!

My favorite French power pop musician Tommy Lorente gives us a FREE download, it’s so catchy even if you don’t speak French just sing along with the “Na Na Na Na.”

The reliable punk-pop of Vista Blue continues his sports-themed Ramones influenced rock. Another FREE download!

Ken Sharp spent some time at Fernando Perdomo‘s new Reseda Ranch Studios 2.0 and recorded this little gem about the 1964 World’s Fair. Only a buck, and worth the trip through his imaginary time machine.

A goodie from KC Bowman and friends (aka The Preoccupied Pipers) about another band and its audience? Hey! It’s still a FREE download.
The Turnback is back with a new single “Unloading An Empty Gun”. If you buy it, maybe Todd, Kenny & Barry will reload and give us another album (please!)

Addison Love and Ken Sharp

Addison Love

Addison Love “Thoughts on Lunch”

Huntington Beach, CA native Addison Love (Yorktown Lads) is a protege of Michael Simmons (Sparkle*Jets UK, Popdudes) and Big Stir Records proudly signed Addison with his first solo album. It starts with the classical piano prelude “Just One Minute” but goes into the bouncy Rubinoos-like rock of  “Anything’s Right.”

Love has all the right influences, as these songs have both modern and retro touchpoints. Beatles and Beach Boys are primary here with an authenticity that reaches out through each tune. Some tunes feel a little underbaked, but Love’s multi-tracked harmonies shine and elevate nearly all the music. “I Think You’re Swell” combines the Beatlesque touches with some nice guitar work. Some added highlights include “Wee & Nancy Lee” and “Like The Beatles” (featuring guest vocals from Simmons.) Several ballads highlight Love’s romantic side, and the gentle “She” is the best of these. A strong debut, and hopefully we’ll hear a lot more from Addison in the future. Check it out!

Ken Sharp

Ken Sharp “Beauty in the Backseat”

Ken Sharp returns to an LP format with more of a Philly Soul/Todd Rundgren influence here. As with his last LP New Mourning he has enlisted the help of Fernando Perdomo, plus some additional special guests. On the opener “Rock Show” has a steady synth keyboard melody and a guitar work by Ace Frehley, next “Mona Lisa Smile” boasts a key assist from Kasim Sulton (Utopia) and it’s a playfully layered composition.

Sharp doesn’t stick in one spot, as the bubblegum pop “Lemons to Lemonade” and “No One Seems To Stay Together Anymore” are catchy highlights. Some inspired 70’s styled songwriting shows on the breezy pop of “Pull The Strings” and “Closer.” There are a few tributes here, from “The Day That David Bowie Died” to “I Wanna Be David Cassidy.” In some spots, Ken’s vocals are just too soft. “Ring On Your Finger” and “Listen To Me” are great tunes that need a more forceful vocal, or supporting vocals. In a bit of musical wish fulfillment, John Oats (Hall and Oats) lends his signature background vocals (baritone and falsetto) on the ’70s soul “Philly Kind Of Night.” My favorite here “The Hardest Part” is a solid power pop mid-tempo gem with all the trimmings. There are just enough great tunes mixed in with the indulgences to make this a Highly Recommended album.

Saturday Night Singles: Ken Sharp, Geoff Palmer, Brad Marino, Thrift Store Halo

Ken Sharp was given a challenge by producer Fernando Perdomo. Write a song with the title, “She Hates the Beatles!” Since Ken is a huge Beatle fan, it wasn’t easy but he did it. I mean, who in their right mind could hate the Beatles, right?

Geoff Palmer is having a friendly rivalry with his bandmate Brad Marino. Both guys play for The Connection and both put out solo singles this week. Fans of the band,  Tommy and the Rockets or New Trocaderos will love it. Which one do you choose? You don’t have to! Get’em both!

Thrift Store Halo is working on a follow up to last year’s LP. This single is a great start. It’s classic Power Pop calling to mind Elvis Costello, Paul Weller, and Nick Lowe.
