Scary to think October is almost over, but we’ve got you covered with great power pop. Dolph Chaney has a fun party vibe on his new single “This Halloween,” as he ends a toxic relationship. Vista Blue reliably combines Beach Boys and The Ramones on its annual Halloween EP, and Chris Church rocks with his Triple Play Single, featuring a track from each of his three LPs. Texas musician Nolan Potter gives us a frighteningly good EP, that channels Todd Rundgren, King Crimson, and more – check out “Holy Scroller.” Overall great prog-rock throughout. The Brilliant Mistakes brings us back home with “The Stories We Tell” and Its Karma It’s Cool is back with an advanced single “She Slept With The Radio On” – and I do that each weekend. The Sunchymes tap the late 60s retro vibe at “Station X” and Roller Disco Combo from Spain is nothing like their name, but they are great power pop, check out the rich “Indonesian Breakfast” and jangling “Dear Mean.” Finally, Ballzy Tomorrow (aka Robbie Rist) covers a great Todd Rundgren tune (it’s a freebie too!) and the always reliable Nick Piunti made a sweet single this past August, and it still sounds great. Peter Baldrachi “Slow Recovery”

Boston musician Peter Baldrachi explores the country genre with his latest LP, as only a few tracks could be considered power pop. The opening title track certainly fills that requirement; a rich production filled with snarling guitars and blaring horns. Next, “People Don’t Change” is an effective ballad with steel pedal guitar twang, and “Seasons” adds piano and some harmonies to the mix.

“In My Heart” is more poetic, and as a lovelorn troubadour Balderachi succeeds here. “Side By Side” returns to the rock side briefly, but the remainder of the album is mid-tempo country songs. “Killing Time” is another winner here, the compelling chorus tells of “missing you and wishing you were here.” Something about it feels like early Mike Nesmith in parts and it is definitely music that deserves to be heard.

The Sunchymes “The Sands Of Time”

The UK based band The Sunchymes continue their fusion of late ’60s psychedelia and power pop just in time for summer. Starting with “Emily Layne” and “She Waits For Your Smile,” they have the same elements; jangling guitars, echoing percussion, and multi-tracked vocals. Stylistically it’s very familiar.

Thankfully the songwriting gets better as we dive deeper; “I’ve Got A Vibe” is a terrific sunshine pop single and the layered vocal harmonies are a highlight. The catchy “Telepathy” is like The Byrds and The Wondermints combined, with great chord progressions. “Down At Sunchyme Bay” and “Sometimes” are pure Beach Boys pastiche, and this is what The Sunchymes do best. Additional highlights include “Try,” “Meet The Seeker” and “In A Century’s Time.” Fans of the retro-styled power pop will want to pick this up for sure.

Ed Ryan has a new single too and this one has a Spanish styled melody featuring a multi-layered guitar strum. It’s always good to hear from Ryan, and this single is a FREE download.

I don’t know much about Austrailian artist Red Caravan, but much of his output on bandcamp is FREE. It’s lo-fi indie pop done with an acoustic guitar. Worth exploring.

Free Music Mondays: My Brother Woody, Fernando Perdomo and The Sunchymes

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard from My Brother Woody. Glad to hear he’s still got those fantastic musical skills, with his new digital release Random Football Musings Set To Music. Since the weather is changing, its time to say goodbye to summer. I can think of no better way than to listen to these FREE tracks of sunshine pop from The Sunchymes. “Through My Eyes” has all the jangle of The Byrds and harmonic chorus of The Beach Boys.
