Tor Guides and The Zags

The Tor Guides

The Tor Guides “Backwards In Reverse”

Swedish musician Torbjorn Pettersson has once again delivered a collection of compelling songs with a melodic sensibility rooted in the McCartney and Brian Wilson school of pop. Torbjorn has eased up on the obvious homage to his heroes, and the production techniques are much more subtle than his past work. In fact, you could label this as “mellow pop.”

“To Be” opens up the set with an uplifting AOR melody that gently flows from its minor chords and Torbjorn’s understated vocal. “In A Good Place” is a slow shimmering ballad that evokes The Beach Boys, with its layered guitars and piano rhythm. Fans of the recent Pearlfishers will find that this Tor Guides album has a similar vibe.

The tempo and energy jump with a cover of Pilot’s “Just A Smile” and on “My Hippie Mess,” the song speaks to all fans of late ‘60s pop. Overall a very pleasant melodic oasis in today’s chaotic world. It’s a great place to stay for a while, so check it out.

The Laissez Fairs

The Zags “The Cliff”

The Zags lead singer David Ricardo’s songwriting approach is straight power pop with some ‘80s and ‘90s stylistic techniques. “No Go” is a good start with its catchy rhythm and bouncy verses. From there we go to “A World Away,”  a previously released tune that remains a most impressive and memorable single.

“Neither/Nor” adds woodwinds to the hook and “Put A Record On” speaks to the current state of music where he pretends he’s Billy Shears, but “no one’s listening anymore.” Another stand out here is “(We Will Be) Awesome.” The song perfectly expresses the frustration and hope of a new band where we “keep at this thing until we graduate.” The theatrical “Catalina Serafina” is another gem, with a some nice “ba ba ba” harmonies. As a whole, the album is a little inconsistent, but there are enough good tracks here to make it music that deserves to be heard.

Stay “Always Here”

Brilliant jangle psyche-pop from Minneapolis, Minnesota also delves in a few covers like The Bee Gees “Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You” and The Kinks “Where Have All The Good Times Gone.” Produced By Owen Morris and featuring guitarist Andy Bell on “You Know It’s Right.” Highly Recommended.

Walty “I’m in Love With Everything”

Philly band goes all over the place from New Wave, Disco, Hard Rock and everything in between. Variety is the spice of this EP.

Hidden in the vaults of Capricorn Records USA for over 50 years, we found lost ’60s band Stone Ridge only has a single available. Fortunately for us, we also have a tribute EP featuring Vinnie Zumo, Jose Estragos and Joe Ricardello (The Modulators) that really make that song shine. And no trick folks, it’s Power Popaholic’s treat; A FREE download for your goodie bag!

The Zags and Romance & Rebellion

RThe Zags

The Zags “Icy Red”

The Zags return with a little more garage aesthetic, but the band still can craft a decent hook with the opener “Dada Plan” and its “da da da” chorus, a bit like T-Rex. “Bedroom Door” is a good follow up with a late 70’s feel (must be the cowbell). With the next several songs clocking in at under 2 minutes, not everything has sticking power, but “The Shake” and “Going In Circles” have a Pete Townshend-like mod guitar style. Other songs come close, like “Replaced” and “Nothing You Know” but miss the bullseye. Definitely worth checking out.

Romance & Rebellion

Romance & Rebellion “Romance & Rebellion” EP

Slick L.A. pop band with a knack for catchy melodies delivers its first EP. Fans of the most recent Rooney and Wyatt Funderburk will definitely enjoy this one.”James Hotel” is an fast tempo’ed single about a crazy one night stand with its dance-able beat. “More Than Friends” is a mid-tempo gem and lead vocalist David LaViola is near perfect in approach about suffering in the “Friend Zone.” Another highlight is “Next Best Thing” a potential hit that evokes raw emotion and is also catchy as hell, with a sweet guitar break. I really look forward to hear more from this band. Highly Recommended.

The Figgs and The Zags

The Figgs

The Figgs “Other Planes of Here”

It’s hard to come up with another band that’s been playing great music for over twenty years with consistency like The Figgs. After 2013’s career-spanning Anthology, the trio of Mike Gent, Pete Donnelly and Pete Hayes move forward. And like an expensive Cabernet, these guys get better with age.

Donnelly is a perfect example of a music machine, between his own solo work, NRBQ and The Figgs he’s like the Energizer bunny and it’s perfectly illustrated on “Late Nights and Early Flights” where a catchy melody drifts off into an echoing chaotic piano coda. “Wealthy Women” is more standard barroom rock and roll that fits right in with The Rolling Stones or The Satisfactors. The thick wah-wah and funky bass leads into the excellent “Oh My.” However this short album (8 tracks) starts to mellow out after “In A Small Hospital” jams away. No matter what, I’ll always be psyched to listen to The Figgs.

The Zags

The Zags “The Zags”

Last years excellent EPs give way to a full album for this retro influenced Portland band. The Zags approach relies on David Ricardo’s distinct vocal and it carries things on “Play It Loud” and “Still Life.” The retro feel is toned down a bit as The Zags find their own style here.

“Frozen Toes” is a memorable, prog influenced song and keyboardist Rachel Broach carries “Not Your Meant-to-be” really well. The Zags make each track compelling listening, standouts being “Waves,” “Get Smart” and the psychedelic end track “Secret Staircase.” Highly Recommended.
