Few in the power pop genre are as solidly talented and mind bendingly eclectic as Lane Steinberg. Starting in the early 80’s the Merseybeat meets Philly soul group The Wind included Steinberg (vocals/guitar) and Steven Katz (vocals/bass/keyboards) as they mixed XTC, the Lovin’ Spoonful, British Invasion bands and numerous other classic influences through 8 albums. Midway through the process the duo changed the band name to Tan Sleeve. But in addition to this Lane has worked magic with his solo projects, duos with R.Stevie Moore, The Cheepskates, John Dunbar, and more. His latest collaboration is with Alex Khodchenko (Kiev, Ukraine) on the 8×8 album “The Anatomy Of An Apricot.” The entire album was recorded via file sharing. The principals have never met, nor even spoken. Their relationship, which began as a series of emails, blossomed over several years into a working musical partnership that transcends the lack of a common language and physical proximity. Buy the album here. I had the pleasure of a quick chat with Lane about this very special album… |
